The launch will follow the debut of Tata’s new 1.5-litre T-GDI ‘Hyperion’ turbo-petrol engine, which is set to power the new generation Sierra arriving on November 25. Developed over several years, the engine features turbocharging and direct injection and produces 170 hp at 5,000 rpm and 280 Nm of torque between 2,000 and 3,500 rpm.
Constructed from lightweight aluminium, the engine features technologies such as a water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger, variable valve timing and an integrated exhaust manifold. It meets BS6 Stage II and E20 fuel norms and will be mated to manual and automatic transmission options. The specific type of automatic gearbox – torque converter or dual-clutch – is yet to be confirmed.
The Harrier and Safari petrol variants are expected to share similar performance figures to the engine setup of the Sierra. Tata’s current diesel range uses a 2.0-litre Kryotec engine that produces 168 hp and 350 Nm, offered with a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
In terms of price, the new petrol versions will be slightly cheaper than the diesel variants. The Harrier is currently priced between ₹14 lakh to ₹25.25 lakh, while the Safari is priced between ₹14.66 lakh to ₹25.96 lakh.
With this launch, Tata will finally introduce a petrol option in its mid-size SUV lineup. The Harrier and Safari petrol models will compete with the MG Hector/Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV700, Hyundai Alcazar and Jeep Compass/Meridian.
Interestingly, Jeep is also expected to use Tata’s 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine in the Compass and Meridian models in the future. More details about this powertrain will be revealed with the Sierra’s debut on November 25.
