Chennai, Nov 24 (IANS) Tamil Nadu is bracing for a prolonged spell of intense rainfall as three significant weather systems over the Indian Ocean continue to intensify, likely to form a cyclonic storm over the southern Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours.
The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) has issued several alerts warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in many districts in the coming days.
Addressing the media, RMC Director A. Amudha said that three cyclonic circulations have developed over different parts of the Indian Ocean.
A deep depression that formed over the Andaman Sea on Sunday has now moved west-northwestwards and is currently located over waters near Malaysia and the Strait of Malacca.
The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression again over the South Andaman Sea within the next 24 hours. Subsequently, the system is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southern Bay of Bengal within 48 hours, Amudha said.
Meanwhile, the low pressure line over Kanyakumari region remains active.
Under its influence, a fresh low pressure area is likely to form over Kanyakumari Sea and adjacent south-western Sri Lankan waters over the Bay of Bengal on 25 November. After this this system can also get strength.
A third atmospheric circulation also persists over the Arabian Sea, creating a rare scenario of three interconnected weather systems influencing regional conditions.
“There are indications that these systems may interact with each other, affecting their speed and intensity,” Amudha said.
Due to intensification of Northeast Monsoon, Tamil Nadu is already receiving heavy rains in the last 24 hours. Very heavy rainfall was recorded at four places, heavy rainfall was recorded at 15 places and moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded at 76 places.
RMC has issued orange alert for Tenkasi and Tirunelveli, where heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places, especially in the hilly areas.
Heavy rainfall is likely over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram districts on November 25.
Heavy rain is likely in seven districts on November 26, followed by heavy rain in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam on November 27.
The IMD has also issued an orange alert for Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam on November 28, and warned of very heavy rainfall over seven northern coastal districts on November 29. The Meteorological Center has urged residents in sensitive areas to remain vigilant and follow official advice as the weather system develops.
