Chennai, Oct 19 (IANS) Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran on Sunday called on Chief Minister MK Stalin to visit Theni district and take immediate steps on war footing to help the people affected by the massive floods in the area.
He urged the state government to set up relief camps and ensure the safety of residents in flooded areas.
Issuing a statement, Nagendran described the Theni incident as “heartbreaking”, adding that one of the most beautiful districts of Tamil Nadu is now in the grip of massive floods.
He alleged that although incessant rains have been cited as the cause, the real reason is a “man-made disaster created by the DMK government”.
According to Nagendran, if the state water resources department had undertaken desilting of canals and maintenance of reservoirs before the onset of the northeast monsoon, such devastation could have been avoided.
“Despite clear forecasts of monsoon, there was no preparation for the people, no prior warning and no preventive steps for their safety,” he said.
Questioning the sudden increase in water from Mullaperiyar Dam, the BJP leader said only 1,000 cusecs of water was released four days ago, while on Saturday night the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department suddenly increased the water flow to 7,163 cusecs.
He commented, “This sudden release raises doubts about whether the floods were made worse by official mismanagement.”
Nagendran accused the DMK government of “gross negligence” due to which people lost their houses, cattle and farms in the middle of the night.
“The so-called model government is moving at a snail’s pace in rescue operations,” he said, adding that despite the increasing human suffering, there is a lack of promptness in the administration’s response.
The state BJP president demanded that Chief Minister Stalin personally visit Theni immediately to oversee the relief operations.
“Relief camps should be opened for the affected people, rescue efforts should be intensified and emergency compensation should be provided without any delay,” Nagendran said. He stressed that the state government should act swiftly to restore normalcy in the flood-ravaged district.
