US Mission To India Surpasses One Million Non-Immigrant Visas In 2023

Last year over 1.2 million Indians visited the United States.

New Delhi:

The US Mission to India on Thursday surpassed its goal to process one million non-immigrant visa applications this year with Ambassador Eric Garcetti personally handing over the one millionth visa to a couple, who will be heading to the United States to attend their son’s graduation at MIT.

Dr Ranju Singh, senior consultant, Lady Hardinge College was elated at receiving an email from the US Embassy about hers being the one millionth visa this year. Her husband Puneet Dargan, was granted the next visa. The couple will be travelling to the US in May, 2024.

Greeting the couple as “Mr and Mrs One million”, Ambassador Garcetti enquired about their travel plans to the US and made suggestions about what not to miss in the country as a tourist.

“I couldn’t be happier today, happy for India, Indians and the United States. Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi and President (Joe) Biden had said lets do a better job in moving faster on the visas and so the Ministry of External Affairs here approved more bodies in places like Hyderabad…more people who can work on these visas, we changed our systems, we worked harder and smarter and we hit a million visa applications processed this year,” the ambassador said.

“Our partnership with India is one of the United States’ most important bilateral relationships, and in fact one of the most important relationships in the world. The ties between our people are stronger than ever, and we will continue our record-setting volume of visa work in the coming months to give as many Indian applicants as possible the opportunity to travel to the United States and experience the US-India friendship firsthand,” he added.

The Mission has already surpassed the total number of cases processed in 2022 and is processing almost 20 per cent more applications than in pre-pandemic 2019.

“We got an email after we had finished our visa interviews that we are supposed to collect our visas, we were told that we were the one millionth…the Ambassador meeting us in person was a great moment for us. We are looking forward to going to the US, we will be there at MIT to celebrate our son’s proud day and then explore the country as tourists,” Dr Singh told PTI.

Dargan informed that their son is currently pursuing his Masters in Financial Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

“This will be our first trip to the US. We are really looking forward to it,” he said.

Last year over 1.2 million Indians visited the United States. Indians now represent over 10 per cent of all visa applicants worldwide, including 20 per cent of all student visa applicants and 65 per cent of all H&L-category (employment) visa applicants.

According to a statement by the US Embassy here, recognising the continued high demand for US visas, the United States continues to invest heavily in our operations in India.

“In the past year, the Mission has expanded its staffing to facilitate more visa processing than ever before. The Mission has made significant capital improvements to existing facilities, such as the US Consulate in Chennai, and has inaugurated a new Consulate building in Hyderabad.

“The Mission has also implemented strategies to increase efficiency, extending interview waiver eligibility to new visa categories and utilising remote work to allow staff around the world to contribute to Indian visa processing. Early next year, the Mission plans to implement a pilot program that would allow domestic visa renewal for qualified H&L-category employment visa applicants,” it said.

India Versus Pakistan, Asia Cup 2023: Virat Kohli Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar To Set Massive World Record In ODI Cricket | Cricket News

Indian cricket team star batter Virat Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to achieve a sensational record in ODI cricket during the Asia Cup 2023 match between India and Pakistan on Monday. The 34-year-old became the fastest to reach 13,000 runs in ODI cricket as he reached the milestone in his 267th innings. The world record previously belonged to legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar, who achieved the feat in 321 innings but Kohli was able to shatter the existing record with a brilliant knock against Pakistan. Australia great Ricky Ponting is third in the list as he took 341 innings to score 13,000 ODI runs. (India vs Pakistan: Asia Cup Live updates)

Virat Kohli ultimately stayed unbeaten on 122 (94b) while KL Rahul  ended on unbeaten 111* (106b) as India scored a massive 356/2 in 50 overs against Pakistan in a crucial Super 4 match. India ultimately won the match by a record 228-run margin – their biggest win over Pakistan in terms of runs.

This was Virat Kohli’s fourth successive century at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. His scores from the last three matches at the venue read – 128*(119b), 131(96b) and 110*(116b).

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul also set a new Asia Cup (ODI) record as they stitched a 233-run stand. They broke the record of Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez and N Jamshed, who scored a 224-run stand against India in 2012. Virat Kohli has now equalled Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara’s record of four centuries in Asia Cup. Only Sanath Jayasuriya (6) has more tons in the continental event.

The duo’s performance was praised by Shubman Gill.

“Very special for us. He (Rahul) was playing his first match after coming back from injury and to be able to score a century in these conditions was pretty magnificent,” he said.

“Obviously Virat Bhai also completed his century and got to 13000 runs which shows his great inspiration to all of us. The ball was doing a little bit in the initial period and they also bowled well with the new ball, but it was important for us to take them on and put the bad balls away to put the pressure back on them.

“I think he (Shaheen) was trying to attack the wickets and I wanted to show intent, worked for me yesterday. There’s a bit of seam movement and once the ball gets older we have to mix it up with slower ones, I found it difficult when they were mixing up their length and pace.”

Asia Cup 2023: Babar Azam Surpasses Virat Kohli For A Massive World Record | Cricket News

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on Wednesday surpassed India’s star batter Virat Kohli to register a new world record. Playing against Bangladesh in the Super 4 match at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Babar scored 17 runs off 22 balls before becoming a victim of Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed. However, the knock helped the right-handed batter reach 2000 ODI runs as captain. Babar did that in only 31 innings beating the world record holder Virat Kohli, who had achieved it in 36 innings.

South Africa great AB de Villiers is third on the list with 41 innings, while Australia legend Michael Clarke follows him with 46 innings.

Talking about the Pakistan vs Bangladesh game on Wednesday, Haris Rauf bowled a couple of hostile spells while Imam-ul-Haq struck a silken 78 as Pakistan secured a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh.

Rauf (6-0-19-4) proved to be too quick for the Bangladeshi batters, who were also troubled relentlessly by Naseem Shah (5.4-0-34-3) after Shakib-Al-Hasan opted to bat. Bangladesh were eventually bundled out for a paltry 193 in just 38.4 overs, despite a 100-run stand and twin half-centuries by Shakib (53 off 57 balls) and former captain Mushfiqur Rahim (64 off 87 balls).

The target was never going to pose a problem for the hosts, who knocked it off in just 39.3 overs.

Even though Fakhar Zaman‘s lean patch continued and Babar Azam was played on by a delivery from Taskin Ahmed that kept low, southpaw Imam was grace personified en route his 84-ball knock.

In all, he hit five fours and four sixes while anchoring the innings in company of Mohammad Rizwan (63 not out off 79 balls). The duo added 85 runs for the third wicket and ensured that there are no hiccups in the chase.

Two of his sixes — a pull-shot over mid-wicket off Mehidy Hasan Miraj and an inside out loft over long-off against Shakib bore testimony to Imam’s talent.

Pakistan will now head to Colombo once again to face arch-rivals India in their second Super Four game on Sunday.

Earlier, Bangladesh suffered two batting collapse — first the the top-order was blown away in the Power Play and the lower middle-order fell like a pack of cards towards the end of the innings. They were reduced to 47 for 4 during the first Powerplay and again lost six wickets for 47 runs between overs 30 to 39.

Rauf terrorised the batters with sheer pace while Naseem also added seam and swing with it.
