Biden to amplify democracy defense, and honor McCain, in Arizona speech

“We have to stand up for America’s values embodied in our Declaration of Independence because we know MAGA extremists have already proven they won’t,” Biden plans to say, according to excerpts released by the White House. “We have to stand up for our Constitution and the institutions of democracy because MAGA extremists have made clear they won’t.”

Biden will also stress “we must not walk away from the sacrifices generations of Americans have made to defend our democracy,” said a White House official previewing the speech.

Biden’s comments come a day after the second Republican primary debate, during which candidates took a handful of swipes at Trump — who skipped the event altogether — but seemed to fail to make a meaningful dent in his clear path to the nomination. As the general election comes into clearer focus, Biden aides are betting that homing in on democracy will buoy the president’s campaign, especially after a spasm of political violence and threats to election integrity have shocked the American system in recent years.

Those close to Biden believe that the issue, along with abortion rights, helped propel Democrats to a far stronger than expected showing during the 2022 midterm elections. Biden has both publicly and privately noted that pundits were wrong in suggesting his closing argument last November should have been about the economy rather than the dangers of political extremism, according to three people close to the president granted anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss those conversations.

The Biden team had thought the danger posed by Trump would fade over time, or that attacks from Republican primary candidates would drag him down. Instead, Trump has continued to dominate the Republican field even as criminal indictments against him have mounted.

That was one factor that pushed Biden to deliver another speech on the need to protect the nation’s democracy. The topic has also featured prominently in his remarks at recent closed-door fundraisers, including several in the past week in California and New York. In those more relaxed, off-camera settings, Biden has warned that “democracy is on the ballot” and has taken a series of his most direct swipes at Trump yet.

“Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans are determined to destroy American democracy because they want to break down institutional structures,” Biden said Tuesday at a San Francisco fundraiser. “Political violence in America is never, never, never, never acceptable.”

In the coming months, Biden intends to adhere to his plan not to directly address Trump’s legal issues for fear of being seen as influencing the process. Instead, he and his staff believe a series of warnings by the president about the ongoing threats to the nation’s foundation will help drive home the point.

Aides originally thought about delivering this speech at another American historical landmark — George Washington’s former military base at Valley Forge, Pa., was considered — but ultimately decided to use the moment to also honor McCain. His widow, Cindy McCain, who heads the U.N. World Food Program, was expected to attend the event Thursday along with other family members.

Biden was also expected to announce funding from the American Rescue Plan to construct the McCain Library. Earlier this month while visiting Hanoi, Biden was joined by old friends in paying tribute to McCain and he later told associates it was one of the most moving moments of his presidency, according to one of the people close to the president.

8 loving ways to honor a pet’s memory: Write an obit, grow a garden, dedicate a day

How have you honored the memory of a beloved pet?

We asked NPR’s audience members to share the creative and loving ways they’ve coped with the grief of losing an animal companion — and their advice for people going through this situation for the first time.

It’s a follow-up to a Life Kit episode and story we published in July about how to process the heartbreak of losing a pet. Life Kit reporter Keisha “TK” Dutes talked to Alexander Hardya writer who recently lost his family dog, Papi, about how to celebrate a pet’s life (he suggests perhaps getting a tattoo or building a shrine) and how to process your feelings (keep the love going by donating your pet’s toys to another animal owner).

Our audience had great ideas to add, from writing an obituary on Instagram to growing a memorial garden. Here’s a selection of audience members’ submissions to Life Kit’s inbox. These responses have been edited for length and clarity.

Write an obituary

Patrick Saunders and his dog, Otis, who died this year.

I lost my dog of 15 years, Otis, in February, and it was brutal, as expected. I’d lost a couple of family dogs as a boy and that was hard, but Otis was the first dog I had on my own as an adult.

To cope with his loss, I wrote what basically amounted to an obituary and posted it on social media with a bunch of photos. Going through all his photos was hard but it helped me grieve, and so did writing out my thoughts about him and his life. It forced me to reflect on all the great things about him and appreciate that I was lucky enough to have that time with him.

The support and love I got from people online was overwhelming. There’s so much wrong with social media and so much hate there these days, but in this case it served as such a powerful vehicle for good. —Patrick Saunders, Atlanta

Create a day in their honor

On the anniversary of the day we lose a dog, we name the day in their honor. For example, July 26 is Birdie Day. I take the day off work. I go to my local 24-hour vet clinic and pay for someone’s bill and donate supplies, food or treats. And I look for opportunities to do good.

One Birdie Day, I was at the library. As I was in line, the librarian was checking out people’s books, answering phones and multitasking like a pro. When it was my turn, I told her how good she was at her job. As I left, she looked me right in the eyes and said, “Thank you for making me feel good about myself.” It was all because I was taking the day to remember Birdie and do good. —Sheryl Bauerschmidt

Grow a memorial garden …

Our last loss was Sara [in 2021]. She had been with us since she was 8 weeks old, and she was everything to us. She greeted us at the door when we came home, slept like a teddy bear in my daughter’s bed, told us when the other cats were hungry and kept me company the long, late nights I worked getting my degree.

My daughter and I constructed a memorial garden with a little patch of wildflowers in our backyard. This year, several sunflowers have survived the raiding squirrels and grown tall, searching out the sun and stretching up toward it. In those flowers, I remember Sara, and — sometimes — it doesn’t hurt quite as much. —Mena Bingham

I have had pets my entire life, and their passing really is devastating. And once they are gone, it feels like the hole in my heart will never heal. I decided long ago that the only way to address this was to take myself to the shelter, adopt another life and process that adoption in the name and memory of my recently passed angel.

The distraction and activity alone of settling a pet into an unfamiliar, albeit loving, environment is a positive one, and the new addition inevitably finds their own place in my broken heart. That is how I have learned to handle the horrible loss. —Linda Smith, Massachusetts

Celebrate your dog the Nepalese way

I took inspiration from Kukur Tiharthe Nepalese Hindu celebration of dogs. I set a date about two weeks out to euthanize my most special dopey dog, Dodger, who was infirm. In order to help myself mourn, I ground up colored chalk in three to four colors and bought meatballs and chocolate [his favorite foods]. Whenever I felt overwhelmed with grief, I put a little chalk on his forehead [done as a blessing and to signify a dog’s sacredness during Kukur Tihar]offered meatball treats and showered him with love.

I invited three of my closest friends [to witness his] death and asked them to bring flowers from their garden. We gave him a half-hour of love, put flowers around his neck [a mark of respect and dignity in the Kukur Tihar tradition] and let him eat some Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups before the vet arrived. We shared special stories and held him while he went to sleep.

I loved that dog so much, but ritualizing [the last few weeks of his life and his death] was perfect. Now, when I am faced with a loss, even minor, I prepare myself by finding some way to acknowledge the sorrow of whatever change is pending and mourn in real-time. It’s been very helpful for me. —Betsy Burson

[We’ve had to say] goodbye to four dogs. My husband, Jim, put together a short video compilation made up of mostly photographs and some video. I watched it over and over in the months after we lost them and now at least once a year. Watching our home movie brings us such joy. It helps us remember how much happiness those four dogs gave us.

Today we had lunch [with our dogs] on a restaurant patio, and before we sat down, the woman at the next table said, “Can I say hello? We just euthanized our dog this morning,” and she burst into tears. Our hearts ached because we knew what she was dealing with. We highly encouraged her to frame photos of her companion and told her we hoped she gets from those photos what we’ve gotten from ours: memories of unconditional love. —Jamie Cherry

Prospect Jett Williams walks way to Mets’ top minor league honor

MIAMI — Jett Williams’ pitch selectivity and ability to draw walks, above all other factors, impressed Mets officials this season.

On Wednesday, the 19-year-old shortstop — who has begun playing the outfield — was named as the organization’s minor league player of the year.

Williams began the season at Low-A St. Lucie and moved to High-A Brooklyn before recently joining Double-A Binghamton.

Williams owns a .263/.425/.451 slash line with 13 homers and 45 stolen bases this season.

A first-round pick in last year’s draft, Williams (who walked 104 times) became the first teenager to lead the organization in walks since David Wright in 2002.

“I love the walks,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said. “I love the fact that he can potentially defend above average at probably three places and maybe four.”

Christian Scott, a 24-year-old right-hander was named the Mets’ minor league pitcher of the year.

In 19 starts over three levels — he got as far as Binghamton — Scott pitched to a 2.57 ERA with 107 strikeouts in 87²/₃ innings.

Scott was a fifth-round pick by the Mets in the 2021 draft.

Starling Marte could rejoin the Mets on their final homestand.

The veteran outfielder played in a simulated game this week in Port St. Lucie and is expected to play for Triple-A Syracuse this weekend.

Marte has been sidelined by a right groin strain.

He last played for the Mets on Aug. 5.

Luisangel Acuna received stitches on or near his lip, according to Showalter, after he was hit in the face by a pitch Tuesday with Double-A Binghamton.

It was unclear if Acuna will return to the lineup Thursday when Binghamton’s playoff series against Somerset resumes.

DJ Stewart was a late scratch from the Mets lineup after getting hit in the wrist with a thrown ball during batting practice.

X-rays taken on the wrist were negative, according to Showalter.

Rafael Ortega, who went 0-for-4, was inserted in the lineup as the right fielder in Stewart’s place.

Brett Baty, who went 1-for-4 with a solo homer, returned to the Mets’ starting lineup as the third baseman after missing the previous six games with a left groin strain.

Ronny Mauricio, who had played third base during much of Baty’s absence, returned to second base. He went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.

Jeff McNeil walked to extend his streak of games reaching base to 13.

Entering play he owned a .360 on-base percentage during the stretch.

Ex-Indiana congressman claims gets 22 months in prison for insider trading – despite ‘honor system’ claim

Former US Congressman Stephen Buyer was sentenced to 22 months in federal prison Tuesday for insider training — despite appealing for mercy from a Manhattan judge by claiming he lives by his Indiana hometown’s “honor system.”

“My life has been good acts. It’s all I’ve ever done,” Buyer, 64, said during a hearing in Manhattan federal court where he was ordered to report to prison on Nov. 28 to begin serving his sentence after a jury convicted him of securities fraud.

Buyer’s invitation to Judge Richard Berman to learn more about him by visiting his Noblesville, IN., hometown came after the judge found that Buyer — a Republican who represented Indiana in Congress from 1993 to 2011 — “repeatedly” lied on the stand during his trial.

Evidence during the two-week proceeding showed that Buyer illegally bought up stock in Sprint after being tipped off about the telecom giant’s $23 billion merger with T-Mobile while playing golf with T-Mobile executive Tony Russo in 2018.

A year later, Buyer, who had been working as a lobbyist and consultant after leaving office, bought stock in the management consulting company Navigant. He’d been given a heads up by his client, another consultancy called Guidehouse Inc., that Guidehouse would soon be acquiring Navigant in a separate merger.

Buyer, here at an earlier court appearance, continues to maintain his innocence despite his securities fraud conviction.

Buyer made more than $320,000 for himself, his relatives and a woman whom he’d been having an affair with from the illegal trades, prosecutors said.

He was ordered Tuesday to make $354,027 in restitution and to pay a $10,000 fine.

Buyer is an attorney and Persian Gulf War veteran who once served as a House prosecutor during former President Bill Clinton’s 1998 impeachment trial. He is expected to lose his law license as a result of the verdict.

Prosecutors, during Buyer’s trial, presented evidence of the ex pol trading messages with a colleague using an encrypted app in an apparent bid to cover up the illicit trades.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Buyer, wearing a dark blue suit, sat silently shaking his head as the judge accused him of repeatedly lying at trial — including by claiming that he didn’t talk “business” with Russo during their March 2018 golf games.

Jurors also did not buy Buyer’s defense that the trades were the result of legitimate market research.

Prosecutors had pushed for a 36-month sentence, arguing that Buyer’s decades of public service showed that he knew that the illegal trades were wrong.

Buyer’s attorneys, meanwhile, had pushed for community service and said Tuesday that the former congressman would appeal the verdict.

After being tipped off, Buyer bought shares in Sprint shortly before the company’s merger with T-Mobile, authorities said.

When asked to speak to the court, Buyer did not apologize, or speak directly about the case.

Instead, he brought up his upbringing in the Hoosier State, where, he said, someone buying a dozen ears of sweet corn for $6 off the back of an unmanned trailer could add the money to a bin $300 already inside of it without worrying that someone would steal the cash.

“It’s the honor system,” he said. “It’s how we live, it’s how I’ve lived my life.”

Buyer is an attorney and Persian Gulf War veteran who once served as a House prosecutor during former President Bill Clinton’s 1998 impeachment trial.

He will lose his law license as a result of the verdict.

Buyer declined to comment on his way out of the courtroom.

IDFA’s Program Takes Shape With Announcement Of Guest Of Honor Wang Bing’s Top 10, Plus Peter Greenaway Retrospective

Acclaimed director Wang Bing, this year’s guest of honor at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, will be using his IDFA platform to highlight nonfiction cinema of his native China.

The festival, which runs from Nov. 8-19, announced the 10 films Bing has selected to be screened at IDFA – one of the perquisites of being named guest of honor. Among the documentaries he’s choosing to highlight are Old Men (1999), directed by Lina Yang; Wheat Harvest (2008), directed by Tong Xu, and IDFA Bertha Fund-supported Last Train Home (2009) by Lixin Fan, “documenting the millions of migrant factory workers that travel home for Spring Festival each year.” (Scroll to see Bing’s full top 10 list).

Director Wang Bing attends the Cannes Film Festival May 19, 2023.

The documentaries chosen by Bing “and their politics are subtle in their film language,” IDFA noted in a release, “representing a wave of filmmaking rarely shown internationally.”

Today, IDFA also revealed a half dozen films directed by Bing that will be screened as part of a retrospective of his work. Those include what the festival called his masterpiece, Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks, “which heralded a new era for Chinese documentary film.” IDFA will screen his two most recent films — Man in Black, and Youth (Spring), both of which premiered earlier this year at Cannes.

“The selection demonstrates how Wang Bing’s frame underlines the human in dehumanizing systems,” IDFA observed.

IDFA also announced the films that will be part of a retrospective of work by director Peter Greenaway, who is receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award this year. “Representing his nonconformist and visually outspoken style, the selection includes cannibalism satire The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, and Rembrandt’s J’Accuse, a fictionalized biopic revolving around the controversies of the art history masterpiece, Rembrandt’s The Night Watch.”

Also announced by IDFA today: two curated focus programs — Fabrications, and 16 Worlds on 16 – as well as Corresponding Cinemas, “a series of screenings and conversations on the invisible connections between filmmakers,” and the return of IDFA DocLab.

Focus program: Fabrications

Exploring the unique relationship of trust between documentary film and audiences, Fabrications presents ten films that test the limits of the format’s promise of truth. Rather than providing an answer, the program explores the documentary form as realism, as opposed to reality, and encourages audiences to think more deeply about how all realities are fabricated on screen. The curated selection questions to what extent our realities inform our fictions, and vice versa, and includes the late Safi Faye’s docufiction about the village she was born, Letter from my Village and Massoud Bakhshi’s kaleidoscopic city portrait Tehran Has No More Pomegranates! The first four titles in the program have been announced; the remainder will be made public in October.

Focus program: 16 Worlds on 16

Looking back on 100 years since Kodak introduced 16mm, this focus program explores how the film format influenced the history of documentary film. The less expensive and lighter alternative to 35mm cameras enabled experiment and independent filmmaking to flourish—also making it more accessible for lesser represented communities, such as Sara Gómezthe Other Island that addressed Cuba’s intersectional inequalities. The selection also includes cinema verité classics, such as Agnès Varda’s Daguerreotypes, and examples of metaphorical critique of authority to bypass censorship, such as Abbas Kiarostami’s exploration into revolutionary mindsets in First Case, Second Case

Corresponding Cinemas: A series of films and conversations on the invisible connections between filmmakers

Placing connectivity and creative influence in the spotlight, Corresponding Cinemas will examine the ways through which the work of each filmmaker has inspired the work of the other, offering a glimpse into cinema’s endless relay of creative connections. Starting with Sky Hopinka, this program invites us to explore the work of and connections between Basma al- Sharif, Jumana Manna, Ibrahim Shaddad, and Abderrahmane Sissako. Accompanied by introductions and conversations, the program will show nine titles by the filmmakers.

The final competition titles will be announced on Wednesday, October 18, during the IDFA 2023 press conference—which will be available to stream at idfa.nl. This is the 36th edition of IDFA, which has become the largest all-documentary film festival in the world.

These are the 10 films selected by Wang Bing to play at IDFA:

Before the Flood (2005) directed by Yifan Li, Yu Yan

Bing’ai (2007) directed by Yan Feng

Born in Beijing (2011) directed by Li Ma

Last Train Home (2009) directed by Lixin Fan

The Next Life (2011) directed by Jian Fan

Old Men (1999) directed by Lina Yang

Petition (2009) directed by Liang Zhao

To Live is Better Than to Die (2003) directed by Weijun Chen

Wheat Harvest (2008) directed by Tong Xu

When the Bough Breaks (2011) directed by Dan Ji

Honor unveiled the Honor 90 Pro in China in May this year alongside the regular Honor 90. Now, the former subsidiary of Huawei is reportedly working on the Honor 100 Pro. Honor hasn’t revealed a launch timeline yet. However, according to a reliable tipster, the launch of the Honor 100 Pro smartphone will take place in November. It is tipped to come with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. The Honor 90 Pro is said to feature dual front-facing cameras as well. The Honor 90 Pro runs on a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC.

DeSantis Strikes Back at Trump-McCarthy GOP ‘Establishment’, Says He Wears Their Attacks as ‘Badge of Honor’

Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis seemed to welcome Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy’s critique of him on Monday, declaring that he wore the disapproval of the “DC Establishment” as a “badge of honor.”

In a Sunday interview with Maria BartiromoMcCarthy predicted that former President Donald Trump would reprise his role atop the Republican ticket in 2024, explaining that “President Trump is stronger today than he was in 2016 or 2020, and there’s a reason why. They saw the policies of what he was able to do with America – putting America first, making our economy stronger.”

He went on to dismiss the idea that DeSantis compared to the former president.

“Look, I served with Ron DeSantis – he’s not at the same level as President Trump by any shape or form,” said McCarthy. “He would not have gotten elected without President Trump’s endorsement.”

In comments made on Monday afternoon, DeSantis seemed to see McCarthy’s disdain as a boon to his campaign.

“Well, look, I would say I mean, I think that if you look at what’s happened with D.C. Republicans, they worked very closely. You know, look, Donald Trump, he supported Kevin McCarthy very strongly for speaker. I don’t think he would have won the speaker vote. Donald Trump was instrumental in him earning that speaker’s gavel. And they worked hand-in-glove, really, throughout his whole presidency,” argued DeSantis.

He continued:

They were on the same team on every major spending bill that came down the pike, and they ended up together, adding $7.8 trillion to our national debt. Never in a four-year period has that much been added than what they did together. And so he said that we’re different. We are different, because in Florida we run budget surpluses. We’ve paid down almost 25% of our state’s debt just since I’ve been governor. All the debt all the way up for all of Florida’s history, we’ve knocked off almost 25% of it. So it’s a much different approach to where we’re doing it right. We have the number one rated economy in the country. We’ve cut taxes, we’ve expanded school choice, and we’ve delivered in a way that has made the state sustainable.

I am not somebody who the D.C. establishment wants to see up there. There’s no question about that, because they know that a lot of things will be changing if I’m there. And look, I would just also point out that we in Florida have a right to expect that they get some stuff done for us like they said they would when they campaigned, because Florida was instrumental in them even having the majority to begin with. This was supposed to be a big red wave in 2022. You had probably the most favorable conditions that Republicans have had in a midterm election since 1946. People were expecting a massive tsunami because inflation was terrible that Biden’s unpopular. All the problems that we’ve seen, nobody’s happy with the direction of the country. And that’s tailor-made for the opposition party to be able to sleep into Washington, D.C.. Instead, the only way the reason they even got the majority is because the governor candidate in New York overperformed and because we delivered a red tsunami in Florida that gave them an extra four seats. That’s the story of the midterm. If you take that out, the Democrats would have held on to the House of Representatives. So Florida did its part. We showed how you can win and we want to see some results as a result of that. But I’m not somebody who’s ever going to be the favored, the favorite of the D.C. establishment. You know what? I wear that as a badge of honor.

It is tipped to come with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. The Honor 90 Pro is said to feature dual front-facing cameras as well. The Honor 90 Pro runs on a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC.

Tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo posted that the Honor 100 Pro will be launched in early November. It is expected to enter internal testing next month. According to the tipster, the handset will feature a 1.5K resolution display with 3,840Hz pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming. It is said to run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. If the leak turns out to be true, this would be an upgrade over the Honor 90 Pro, which has a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC under the hood. Further, the Honor 100 Pro is tipped to come with dual front-facing cameras.

Honor has also not yet confirmed the launch timeline of the Honor 100 Pro. It is, therefore, safe to consider these details with a pinch of salt.

The purported Honor 100 Pro is expected to come with upgrades over the Honor 90 series. Both Honor 90 and Honor 90 Pro were launched in China in May with initial price tags of CNY 2,499 (roughly Rs. 29,160) and CNY 3,299 (roughly Rs. 38,000), respectively.

The Honor 90 Pro sports 6.78-inch full-HD+ (1,200 x 2,664 pixels) curved OLED displays with a refresh rate of 120Hz, up to 1,600 nits peak brightness, and 3,840Hz PWM dimming. As mentioned, it is powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset.

For photos and videos, Honor 90 Pro has a triple camera setup including a 200-megapixel primary camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera and a 32-megapixel telephoto portrait lens. For selfies, it features a 50-megapixel camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. It packs up to 512GB of onboard storage. It is backed by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 90W wired charging.

NYC street renamed in honor of slain NYPD detective who was gunned down with his partner: ‘We will never forget him’

A street corner in Manhattan was renamed Saturday for slain NYPD Det. Jason Rivera, who was gunned down with his partner, Wilbert Mora, while answering a 911 call.

The intersection of 204th Street and Sherman Avenue was rechristened “NYPD Detective Jason ‘TaTa’ Rivera Way,” with Rivera’s wife, Dominique, and their child — who was born after the officer was killed — in attendance, along with Police Commissioner Eddie Caban, Mayor Adams and other officials.

Rivera, 22, and Mora, 27, were responding to a 911 call in Harlem on Jan. 21. 2022, when crazed career criminal Lashawn McNeil ambushed them.

Both officers were shot and mortally wounded.

“Jason joined the police department to improve relations between the community and the police. I hope when people pass this corner, they look up at the sign, remember him, and I hope it encourages and motivates them to go after their dreams,” Dominique Rivera said.

The corner is “where his father dropped him off for school, and where he hung out with his friends,” Caban told those assembled for the ceremony.
