With Diwali around the corner, online food delivery platform Swiggy has raised platform fees to $10.
Just as Zomato raises platform fees to $“Manage the holiday peak” at 10 o’clock on October 23.
While the two largest food delivery giants may be looking to profit from platform fees, their tactics have dampened the festive mood among some netizens ahead of Diwali.
An angry user posted on X about the rising platform fees, adding that vegetable and food prices had reached an all-time high. “What logic is this. I see a lot of negative comments. Fruits and veggies are already expensive. Menu prices have gone up and they charge a subscription fee and a minimum amount to place an order,” the user wrote, calling on all users to #CancelSwiggy.
“Great, we have to do it too…”
Meanwhile, financial influencer Ravisutanjani traces how Swiggy started with free food delivery but now has a never-ending list of platform fees, packaging, GST, etc. “Ordering started with free delivery, now it’s GST, delivery and packaging charges, platform fees,” Ravi Sutanjani wrote.
Another user expressed disappointment over Swiggy’s trek, but in an iconic way Munnabai MBBS meme, prompting many X users to join the trend.
Previously, Swiggy’s platform fee was $6. However, its Gurgaon-based rival continues to rise in terms of surge.
Zomato launches platform fees in August 2023, charges $2 per order. By January 2024, Zomato will increase platform fees to $4 per order. Currently, it charges $10 per order. Platform fees apply to all customers regardless of Gold membership.
