Police Kenya has been given 14 days to capture a man accused of stabbing a guard to death outside the presidential office in the capital on Monday. nairobiAn attack is widely viewed as a major security lapse.
The investigating officer on Tuesday sought more time from the court as the suspect, who claimed to have been sent by the devil, is to undergo a mental health assessment.
Police say the man disguised himself as a homeless person walked into the main entrance of the State House and killed a security officer after shooting with a bow and arrow. The officer was declared dead at the hospital. The person was arrested at the scene.
It is unclear whether the suspect, Kithuka Kimunyi, knew the officer, identified as Ramadhan Hamisi Matanka.
Judge Christine Njagi said Kimunyi should first be taken to hospital for treatment as he claimed he suffered a fractured leg during the attack. He appeared in court limping on Tuesday.
President William Ruto was in his office when the attack occurred. The President’s office and residences are guarded by an elite police squad.
