Surya Tilak at Ram Lalla in Ayodhya today: All you need to know

The Surya Tilak ceremony will be held at the sanctum sanctorum at 12 noon.

This year’s Rama Navami festival holds special significance for devotees in Ayodhya and across the world as it marks the first celebration of the birth of Lord Rama at the newly inaugurated Rama Temple. To commemorate the birth of Ram Lalla, Surya Tilak ceremony will be held at the sanctum sanctorum at 12 noon.

Surya Tilak by Ram Lalla

Designed by Indian scientists, Surya Tilak is realized through a device of mirrors and lenses developed by scientists at the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, a subsidiary of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research ( CSIR).

This mechanism will ensure that the sun shines directly on Ram Lalla’s forehead at noon on Ram Navami day (today). According to scientists, the size of the tilak is set at 58 mm and its duration is set at about three to three and a half minutes, of which two minutes are for full illumination.

Dr. DP Kanungo, chief scientist, CSIR-CBRI, Roorkee, said, “This has been carefully planned, designed and implemented to achieve the highest accuracy.” Dr. DP Kanungo, scientist, CBRI, said, “100% Surya Tilak will smear Ram Lalla forehead of the idol” Pradeep Chauhan, who was involved in the design of the Ram temple, agrees.

The Surya Tilak installation, carefully designed by the CBRI team, arranges sunlight to shine on the idol of Lord Ram for about 6 minutes every year. The mechanism consists of gearboxes, reflectors and lenses and is strategically positioned to track the path of the sun from the third floor near the shikara to the Garbha Griha.
