Supreme Court warns Ramdev, Patanjali, asks them to stop 'misleading' advertisements

The Supreme Court today strongly reprimanded Yoga Guru Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurveda.

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court today came down heavily on yoga guru Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved for prima facie breach of promises made to the court about its products and statements claiming their medicinal efficacy.

A bench of Justices Hima Kohli and A Amanullah issued notice to Patanjali Ayurved and its Managing Director asking why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them.

The bench cautioned Patanjali Ayurved and its officials from making any statement adverse to any medicine system in the media, both print and electronic, as they had earlier said in their undertaking before the court.

On November 21 last year, the lawyer representing the company had assured the top court that from now on there would be no violation of law, especially related to advertising or branding of products, and those claiming medicinal efficacy of Patanjali products. No contingent statement will be made against any system. The drug will be released to the media in any form.

The Supreme Court had then warned the company co-founded by Ramdev and dealing in herbal products against making “false” and “misleading” claims in advertisements about its medicines to treat several diseases.

The top court is hearing a petition by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) alleging a defamation campaign by Ramdev against the vaccination drive and modern medicines.
