Justice Verma is facing impeachment motion after cash was found at his official residence that caught fire in March 2025.
On 16 January, he told a parliamentary panel that no cash had been recovered from his official residence in New Delhi. In his reply filed before the parliamentary panel, Verma had said, “I was not present when the fire broke out. No cash was recovered from my residence. I have no role in it.”
Justice Verma was transferred back from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court after burnt wads of currency notes were found at his official residence in New Delhi on March 14, 2025. The top court had agreed to hear Justice Verma’s plea challenging the formation of the inquiry committee on December 16, 2025, and issued notice to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and secretaries general of both houses of Parliament.
Earlier, the then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna had initiated an in-house investigation and constituted a three-member committee to probe the matter. The committee submitted its report on May 4, 2025, which found Justice Verma guilty of misconduct.
After Justice Verma refused to resign, the CJI forwarded the report and the judge’s response to the President and Prime Minister, setting the stage for impeachment proceedings.
