The Supreme Court on Thursday, January 15, sentenced the makers of Vijay’s much-awaited film. Jana AvelBack in the Madras High Court, his plea for urgent hearing was rejected.
The film, originally scheduled to release on January 9, is awaiting clearance certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih declined to take up the case, saying the apex court was “not inclined to hear the petition”, leaving the matter for the High Court to decide. Since the division bench has scheduled the matter for January 20, Justice Dutta said there is no need for the Supreme Court to intervene now.

The petition was filed by the film’s producer, KVN Productions LLP, against a division bench order of the Madras High Court that had stayed the previous single bench direction to the CBFC to immediately certify the film.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing KVN, argued that it is a common practice in the film industry to announce release dates before getting CBFC approval. He said that more than 5,000 theaters were already booked for the release.
During the hearing, Justice Dutta said that the single bench acted very quickly and disposed of the case in just one day, as the case was filed on January 6 and the judgment was pronounced on January 7.
He said, “We would welcome all judges to dispose of cases within a day or two of filing. But this should happen in all cases. This is a fast pace… The case is filed on the 6th, decided on the 7th… When the case is fixed before the division bench on the 20th, they have the right of appeal.”
He also pointed out that the CBFC chairman’s January 6 order, which referred the matter to the review committee, was not challenged by the producers. Rohatgi had argued that the CBFC’s action was “mala fide” and had urged the court to intervene, stressing that the film was a perishable commodity.
Jana AvelDirected by H Vinoth and backed by KVN Productions, is highly anticipated by fans, but its release has been delayed due to legal hurdles.
The film is being promoted as Vijay’s “swan song”. his last big film Before he entered full-time politics with his own party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).
The next hearing of the case will be on January 20.
