Study finds artificial intelligence can predict patients’ future health

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to predict the types of health conditions patients may develop in the future, a study has found.

The researchers say the technology could be used to help doctors monitor patients or make diagnostic decisions.

this AI A tool called Foresight is part of the same family as the following artificial intelligence models Chat GPT But training has been carried out using information from NHS electronic records.

It was developed by researchers from King’s College London (KCL), University College London (UCL), King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

The researchers trained three different Foresight models using data from more than 811,000 patients at two NHS trusts in London, as well as publicly available datasets in the United States.

Based on the patient’s records, 10 possible illnesses that the patient may experience next are given.

When using data from NHS hospitals, Foresight was able to correctly identify conditions 68% and 76% of the time. When using US data, the accuracy is 88%.

Zeljko Kraljevic, a researcher in health informatics, biostatistics and health informatics at KCL and first author of the study (published in The Lancet Digital Health), said the findings show that the tool “can be useful in predicting patient health trajectories.” Highly accurate, demonstrating that it could be a valuable tool to aid decision-making and inform clinical research.”

Senior author Richard Dobson is Professor of Medical Informatics at KCL and UCL and NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Center (BRC) Informatics Theme Lead, said: “This is an exciting time for artificial intelligence in healthcare, and in order to develop effective tools we must ensure that we use the appropriate data to train our models and work towards Achieving the shared goal of supporting the health care system to support patients.”

The research team is now seeking more hospitals to participate in developing Foresight 2, which Professor Dobson said will be a “more accurate language model”.
