Students from the Northeast protested at Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday and demanded justice for Tripura student Anjel Chakma, who died after being stabbed in Dehradun recently.

Hundreds of students from the Northeast studying in Delhi University participated in the protest organized under the banner of Northeast Students Society of Delhi University (NESSDU) and demanded a thorough investigation into Chakma’s murder.

Chakma (24), from Tripura’s Unakoti district, was attacked by a group of six people when he protested against racial comments being made on him and his younger brother in Dehradun on December 9. He died in a hospital on 26 December.

Dehradun Police has arrested five out of six accused. One of them, Yagyaraj Awasthi, a resident of Kanchanpur district of Nepal, is absconding.

Speaking to PTI, NESSDU president Pointing Thokchom said, “We demand that the case be transferred to the CBI and appropriate compensation be given to the family. There should be a law to protect North-East students from racial abuse and attacks.” All India Chakma Students Union vice-president Bipul Chakma alleged that the Uttarakhand administration delayed the investigation, leading to students gathering at Jantar Mantar demanding justice.

He said, “I went to Dehradun on December 11 after Angel Chakma’s father called because no one was helping. I myself have been a victim of racial abuse in DU. We want this vicious cycle of racial abuse and attacks against students from the North East to stop.”
