New Delhi, October 27 (IANS) BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, claiming that the party is “scared” of the removal of fake voters and has gone into “panic mode” over the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the voter list.
This comes as the Election Commission of India (ECI) is preparing to conduct SIR in West Bengal ahead of the assembly elections next year.
The ruling Trinamool Congress is against the idea of conducting this exercise and has been consistently claiming that the SIR is an indirect ploy by the central government and the BJP to implement NRC in West Bengal.
On the other hand, the BJP has claimed that the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal is opposing the SIR because they fear that the names of illegal voters will be removed from the electoral list.

He further claimed that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s “loud drama” is not for the people, but for her “biggest illegal vote bank” – including illegal immigrants, fake voter ID cards and cut-money machinery – which has kept her in power.
Bhandari said, “She knows that when fake names are removed from the voter list… TMC’s infiltration politics collapses. Mamata needs to go to save Bengal from illegal infiltration.”
The SIR will take place amid strong opposition from the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal.
The CPI(M)-led Left Front, although it is not primarily against the conduct of this exercise, has claimed that names of genuine voters should not be removed from the voter list as a result of this exercise. There have also been controversies over the appointments of Booth Level Officer (BLO) and Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) in West Bengal.
The last time SIR was conducted in West Bengal was in 2002.
