Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, met the family of Shubam Dwivedi, a resident of Kanpur on Wednesday, who was killed in a terrorist attack in Pahgam, Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April.
Rahul Gandhi told the family that he would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting a special session of Parliament requested to discuss justice for the victims of the Pahgam terror attack.
In a post on X, Gandhi expressed his grief over the incident and called for strong action against those responsible.
“Today I met Shubam Dwivedi’s family members, who were martyred in a cowardly terrorist attack in Pahgam and consoled them. In this sad moment, the whole country stands with the bereaved families across the country. Strict and concrete action should be done justice against terrorists and victims.
Shubam’s father, Sanjay Dwivedi said that Gandhi supported the demand for the official martyr’s status for his son.
“I demand that Shubam should be given the status of ‘martyr’. Rahul Gandhi said that he wrote a letter to the PM for a special session in Parliament. Priyanka Gandhi spoke to me and said that my demands are correct. He said – I will pressurize the government and talk to him to give Shubam the position of ‘Shahid’ to give Shubam the position.
Shubam’s wife also reiterated the family’s appeal.
“We have only one demand, and we have also told Rahul Gandhi that Shubam should be given the status of ‘martyr’ … Rahul Gandhi said that he will take the issue forward and write a letter to the PM for the same,” he said.
The April 22 terror attack at Pahalgam targeted a group of tourists, killing 26 people, including a Nepali National. India has since taken strong diplomatic steps on its alleged support for cross-border terrorism against Pakistan.
On 24 April, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also met the Dwivedi family in Kanpur and condemned the attack.
“On 22 April, a terrorist attack took place in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, in which a person from Kanpur was killed. Shubam Dwivedi married two months ago, and was killed in a terrorist attack there. It is a very cowardly attack by terrorists and shows that it is as a country. (AI)
