The penultimate volume of the fifth and final season Released on December 26, three new works prepare for the finale, which will be released on December 26. Netflix New Year’s Eve (December 31).

At the end of the scene, Jonathan reveals that he’s been wearing his engagement ring, and after the two confess everything they hate about each other, he says, “I think I’ve screwed you over so much that it would be nice to do something right in the end. Nancy Wheeler, won’t you marry me?”

Nancy accepts him, tells him she loves him and kisses him – just before they find out and run away. Fans were confused by the resolution of the scene, which series creators the Duffer Brothers later confirmed was supposed to signal the end of their relationship.

“This is what a breakup is,” they told peopleand said: “They have broken up.”

They added: “It’s hard to recall exactly when the idea came about, but I think we – and the writers – felt that Nancy needed to be on her own, be independent and have a chance to find herself.”

This prompted criticism that the show’s horror was less impactful, but the Duffer brothers said the decision stemmed from a desire to avoid shock value.

“We can easily kill anyone at any time – it’s not difficult,” they told independent. “It’s more of an impact on all of our other characters.

“We always want to think ahead and not do it just to shock people, or because people seem to have a bloodlust.”
