Hurricane Amy is ‘especially strong’ for October

Storm Amy is one of the most powerful to hit the UK in some time, with an forecast of up to 100mph.

Since 2015, previous storms have seen reaching 80-90mph, the Met Office says.

The tallest air gust recorded in the UK in October is recorded at a speed of 124 mph on 28 October 1989 in the Rouge of South Glamorgan.

The highest speed recorded in Scotland in October has been recorded at a speed of 106 mph on 18 October 1984 in Lanarkshire, Lanarkshire.

However, both these incidents took place in 2015 before the Met Office started naming the storms.

The Met Office says that “it is possible” that Scotland can see a record-breaking of October in the weekend.

Experts share power cut tips

Storm Amy is expected to damage property at the end of this week, especially in Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland.

Niceic technical director Paul Collins has shared group expert tips to deal with the power outage.

How to be safe in a storm

ICYMI: Weather warning on every field

The Met Office today warned of fresh yellow and amber season, as Hurricane Amy spread across the country.

Every region in the UK will be brought under strong rain and air, with no area a yellow warning.

Most of the Scotland, the north and east of England are forecasting the worst effects from 3 pm on Friday afternoon, which is going on by the end of Saturday.

Adverse conditions will then reach the rest of Wales and Southern and Midlands regions of England from 3 pm on Saturday, midnight to 7 pm.

The amber warning for most people of Western Scotland on Friday will now continue till late evening, which is shifting to Northern Scotland.

Experts issue alert to landslides

Geologists of the British Geological Survey have warned that the predictions of conditions over the weekends have the ability to trigger landslides in the most difficult areas.

Western Scotland is predicted to see the strongest winds and rain with the amber weather warning released from Friday to Saturday morning.

Engineering Geohazards Geoist Claire Dashwood said: “Records suggest that this week has triggered landslides in Western Scotland due to similar rains to forecast this week.

“Both natural and infrastructure are likely to be affected by the possibility of dissolution in roads and railways within the slope warning area, it can be particularly impressive in the region due to the presence of separate communities and long turns routes.”

Thousands of farms and businesses are without electricity

According to the power suppliers, about 184,000 houses in the Republic of Ireland were without electricity during the storm Amy in the Republic’s fields and businesses at 5.15 pm.

The ESB stated that the affected properties were mainly in the counties Gaulway, Mayo, Sligo, Rosomon, Letrim, Cavan and Dongal.

It also warned that further “power outage can be expected”.

A spokesperson said: “Crew will continue the work of long restoration as much as possible this evening, but it is likely that most of the customers will not restore their power tonight due to dangerous weather conditions and access challenges.”

  • Avoid traveling as long as it is fully necessary, especially on high or exposed routes.
  • Monitor the official weather update and follow instructions from local authorities.
  • Protect external items such as cans, signage, and garden furniture to prevent damage.
  • Prepare a basic emergency kit with torch, battery and non-reflexible food.
  • Stay indoors during a period of strong wind and make sure the windows and doors are closed.
  • Check on weak neighbors, especially people living alone or in rural areas.

Edrian Simpson, head of the policy at ROSPA, said: “Hurricane Amy can be a serious weather incident and urge all of us to take sensible precautions.
