New Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS) BJP MP from New Delhi Bansuri Swaraj on Monday asked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to stop justifying rape and advising women not to step out of the house after dark.
Addressing media persons, Swaraj referred to the gang rape in Durgapur and said, “In Mamata Banerjee’s government a Dalit medical college student is gang raped, but instead of taking strict action, she insensitively justifies this heinous crime, saying women should not go out late at night. This is completely shameful.”
He said, “The TMC government of West Bengal has become a symbol of regressive thinking. From Park Street 2012 to Hanskhali 2022, Kamduni 2013 and 2024 to RG Kar Medical College incident, Mamata Banerjee has continuously tried to justify rape incidents with shameful statements.”
Swaraj said this is not the first example and a clear pattern has emerged, in which TMC has become synonymous with regressive thinking. Even in the brutal rape case that took place in Park Street in 2012, CM Banerjee had blamed the victim and said that it was ‘Sajano Ghatna’, i.e. the case was fabricated, which is a completely shameful stance.
The BJP MP said, “Mamata Banerjee herself raises the slogan of ‘Mother, Soil and Manush’, yet under her rule, the ‘Mother’ of Bengal is humiliated, ‘Mati’ is drenched in blood and ‘Manush’ is in trouble.”
Swaraj highlighted that, during the RG Kar rape case in 2024, CM Mamata Banerjee tried to justify the crime and claimed that such incidents happen regularly because young men and women now walk side by side.
This shows the regressive mentality of TMC. He said, in 2024, when medical students of the state protested and sought justice, Mamata Banerjee termed him ‘inspired’.
BJP spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan said that this is a very serious matter and it is necessary to bring it to the public’s attention that Congress leaders should remain silent on the inhuman incident that happened with the Dalit girl in West Bengal.
He said, “Top Congress leaders similarly remained silent on the rape of a 10-year-old tribal girl in Mysore, Karnataka. A few days ago, the Congress was also silent on the gruesome violence against BJP MP Khagen Murmu in West Bengal. Despite this, the Congress and its allies are attempting to create a false narrative by linking unrelated incidents to give political colour.”
