Stellantis’ new STLA large electric vehicle platform: everything you need to know

StellantisThe Italian-American automaker has introduced a new electric vehicle (EV) platform STLA Large.

It will support batteries capable of providing a range of 800 kilometers and an “extreme” powertrain capable of outperforming the Hellcat V8 engine.

The new STLA Medium platform, the production of which began abroad under the new Peugeot e-3008 SUV, belongs to the new STLA Large platform. It is for electric vehicles (EVs) with a length between 4.7 and 4.9 metres. It’s also “BEV-native,” but Autocar reports it can run hybrid powertrains as well as front, rear, and four-wheel drive powertrains.

This new platform is intended for the largest vehicles in the Stellantis lineup, which is expected to include crossovers, SUVs and lower-slung vehicles in the D and E segments. The length of these vehicles ranges from 4.76 to 5.13 meters.

While the US market is currently the main focus, Stellantis has confirmed via a press release that some European factories – such as the Alfa Romeo factory in Cassino, Italy – will be converted to produce the STLA large EV for local sales . In addition to other full-size EVs, it will initially be used for two Dodge and Jeep models, possibly the Charger muscle car and the Wagoneer S SUV.

Jeep’s Wagoneer S will reportedly accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, boast 600 horsepower and feature the brand’s 4xe off-road technology when it launches in the US in the second half of 2024.

Around the same time, Maserati is expected to introduce a closely related EV replacement for the Levante SUV, and Alfa Romeo will use the STLA Large for a range-topping luxury SUV in the style of the BMW iX and an electric Giulia sedan replacement. Stellantis said the platform will underpin eight production cars by the end of 2026, including at least one car from Chrysler, which currently sells only the Pacifica MPV.

Additionally, individual brands will make announcements about their plans for STLA Large later this year. Meanwhile, the press release states that American brands, Dodge and Jeep will release relevant EVs in the coming months.

Stellantis said the fastest STLA large cars will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in approximately 2.0 seconds, as an indication of its performance potential with “extreme power that will outperform the existing Hellcat V8”.

Stellantis has not yet announced whether it will bring any STLA platform-based model to India. However, we anticipate that some of the brand’s future offerings built on this platform will be sold in the Indian market.
