At least 16 people, including 14 students and two teachers, died after a boat capsized in Harni Lake in Gujarat’s Vadodara on Thursday. The incident occurred when a group of 27 students had gone on a picnic with their teachers. A day after the tragic incident, visuals of the tragedy are going viral on social media when students of New Sunrise School can be seen standing in queue for a boat ride.
According to visuals shared by news agency PTI, students were seen standing in a line while waiting for their turn to ride the boat. According to initial reports, the students and teachers reached the lake for a picnic around 4.30 pm and boarded a boat which reportedly capsized due to being over capacity.

“14 children and two teachers have died in this tragedy. One student who was rescued is undergoing treatment at SSG hospital,” an official from Harni police station was quoted as saying.
Prime Minister announces ex-gratia amount; President expressed condolences
Expressing grief, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased. He also announced to give Rs 50,000 to the injured.

President Draupadi Murmu also expressed condolences, saying, “The news of the death of children and teachers in a boat accident in Vadodara, Gujarat is extremely sad. “I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and wish for the success of the rescue operation.”

Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
