Vinypeg – The family of a first nation woman who died at the hands of the Vinypeg serial killer, will have a chance to make a victim influence in court a year after his sentence.
The Manitoba Court of Kings Bench says it has agreed to a special hearing on August 15, so the victims and community influence statement can be presented about Ashley Shingoj.
Shingoj was one of the four first nation women killed by Jeremy Skibiki in 2022.
He was first convicted of murder and sentenced to life in jail, but during his trial, Shingoj was still identified and he was only referred to in court as a Buffalo woman.
The police announced earlier this year that the new information after the test inspired him to identify the unknown victim as a shingose.
The court says the hearing is appropriate and necessary to give the woman’s family equal opportunities to relatives of other victims.
