Southern Water employees Since Tuesday, work is being done day and night to repair the burst water supply line in Hastings. and were still working to resolve the issue as of Boxing Day.

A statement on Boxing Day said: “These problems were primarily due to increased demand on the network while reservoirs were being refilled and a power outage at our Brede Water Supply Works, which caused the site to be shut down for 25 minutes.”

“While we cannot completely rule out the possibility of further disruptions, as was experienced yesterday, both water supply works are currently running well reducing the risk of pressure loss or widespread supply disruption.

“It will take several days for drinking water storage reservoirs to return to their normal levels. Customers will be notified via our website, and our team will open the bottled water station at Pelham Place beginning at 9 a.m. as a precaution.”

The issue arose on 23 December when warnings were raised that a water main north of Hastings had burst and teams rushed to fix it.

Although the pipe was repaired on Christmas Day, Southern Water then told customers that a reservoir in its network was experiencing problems, which meant water levels were lower than normal.

Director of Water Operations Tania Flask said on Christmas Day: “We know this is worrying news, especially on Christmas Day, and we want to reassure our customers that we are doing everything we can to restore normal levels at Fairlight Reservoir.”

Helena Dollimore, Labor MP for Hastings and Rye, said in a video post on social media platform X: “I am angry that Hastings is once again paying the price for Southern Water’s failures.

“How could the network of pipes in our city be in such a state that one burst could put us in this dangerous situation?”

he told Guardian: “After years of neglect our city’s water infrastructure is no longer fit for purpose, and Southern Water must do better… When that same pipe burst after five days of major drainage last May, and an environmental disaster last month when millions of plastic beads were released from their waste water plant, we cannot tolerate any more.”
