Riek Machar, the country’s former rebel leader who became one of the vice presidents after the peace deal, is currently detained and faces treason charges, which he denies.
UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix told the UN Security Council last month that the crisis in South Sudan was escalating, “a breaking point” was in sight, and time to get the peace process back on track was “dangerously running short”.
The international community also condemned the misuse of public resources on Thursday, with civil servants’ salaries unpaid for months.
“Instead of focusing on governing the country or preparing for elections, the leadership is continuing unilateral destabilizing reshuffles,” the statement said.
South Sudan is scheduled to hold its first elections in December 2026.
The international community expressed concern over renewed violence in the country and urged all parties to “cease armed attacks” and restart stalled peace talks.
“All of South Sudan’s friends and partners, and especially those neighboring South Sudan who have the most to lose from the possibility of renewed large-scale conflict, must be united in their message – that enough is enough,” the statement said.
Governments also warned against disruption to humanitarian aid groups, which provide basic services to more than 70% of the population in the troubled East African country.
Last week, the US threatened to withdraw aid to South Sudan, accusing the government of imposing excessive fees on humanitarian groups and hindering their operations.
