The sister-in-law of South Korea international Hwang Eui-jo was sentenced to three years in prison on Thursday for posting private explicit videos of the footballer online and trying to blackmail him. The unnamed defendant is accused of sharing the videos on social media while pretending to be his ex-girlfriend, accusing him of infidelity. The release of the videos sparked another police investigation into the Nottingham Forest striker, looking into whether the sex acts were illegally filmed without consent. Huang has denied the accusations and prosecutors have yet to clarify or formally charge him.

The Seoul Central District Court said in its verdict that the sister-in-law posted the videos “knowing that they would be spread indiscriminately,” Yonhap News Agency reported.

“The content has been widely disseminated inside and outside South Korea… The nature of her crime is extremely serious,” the court said.

The three-year sentence was one year less than what prosecutors had sought.

The court said it took into account the defendant’s admission of the crime and Huang’s request for leniency.

The defendant said in his final testimony: “I caused great harm to the victim and I deeply regret what I did.”

The 31-year-old Huang Zhelun is on loan from Forest to Turkish club Alanyaspor. He scored in the World Cup qualifier against Singapore in November.

But the Korean Football Association has suspended him from the national team, pending the outcome of an investigation into alleged illegal filming.

The ban prevented him from participating in the Asian Cup in Qatar.

Hwang Chulun played 62 games for the South Korean team and scored 19 goals.
