Jammu, Nov 3 (IANS) A soldier was killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Monday when his service rifle allegedly went off accidentally. The officers provided this information.
Officials said Naik Amarjeet Singh was on sentry duty at his camp in Jhulas village in Poonch district when his service rifle accidentally went off.
“He was immediately taken to the Army field hospital for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries. Police have taken cognizance of the incident and have launched an investigation,” an officer said.
The Army guards the 740-km-long Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, which covers Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora districts of the valley and Poonch, Rajouri and partly in Jammu district of Jammu division.
The Border Security Force (BSF) guards the 240 km long international border located in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts.
The Army is deployed on anti-infiltration and counter-terrorism activities along the LoC, while the BSF performs these duties along the international border.
Jammu and Kashmir Police and security forces conduct counter-terrorism activities in the hinterland, including countering terrorist acts by gun-toting terrorists, their over-ground workers (OGWs) and supporters.
Drug traffickers, drug smugglers and people involved in hawala money and other financial scams are also on the radar of security forces.
It is believed that the money generated from drug trafficking, hawala money racket and other illegal financial activities is ultimately used to sustain terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
The revised strategy of the security forces aims to destroy the entire terror ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir instead of just chasing gun-wielding terrorists.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has so far terminated the services of several government employees found to have terrorist links.
