A Ukrainian sniper is believed to have broken the world record by killing a Russian soldier from almost 2.5 miles away.

Kyiv’s security service told Ukrainian media on Saturday he made the kill at a distance of 3.8km (2.3 miles).

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) press office said in a statement: ‘The SBU sniper set a world record for a successful shot.

‘He hit a Russian soldier from an incredible distance.

‘SBU snipers are changing the rules of world sniping, demonstrating the ability to work effectively at fantastic distances.’

The previous world record was held by a Canadian special forces sniper at a distance of 3.54km (2.2 miles) in Iraq from 2017.

The Ukrainian sniper beat this by approximately 260m (0.16 miles).

British sniper Craig Harrison previously held the title after he killed a Taliban fighter in Afghanistan in 2009, from a distance of 2.48km (1.54 miles).

Ukrainian media outlets also shared footage apparently showing the record-breaking strike, but this has not yet been independently verified.

The shot was said to be made with a domestically produced rifle dubbed ‘the Lord of the Horizon’.

Around a year ago Ukraine previously almost broke the record when one of its snipers hit a Russian soldier from 2.74km (1.7 miles) away – thought to be the world’s second-longest combat kill.

Ukrainian soldiers have been seen this weekend using high-speed jet-skis to carry out lightning-fast attacks.

The country said its special forces will continue to use them to attempt to weaken Vladimir Putin’s control of invaded Crimea.

And new foreign secretary David Cameron flew out to Kyiv for a meeting with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky just four days into his job.
