Kolkata, Nov 12 (IANS) The Border Security Force (BSF) arrested a smuggler at the India-Bangladesh Border (IBB) in North 24-Parganas district of West Bengal and seized gold worth over Rs 88 lakh from his possession.
A senior BSF officer said, “BSF personnel of 143 battalion under South Bengal Frontier, deployed at Tarali-1 border post, had received specific intelligence regarding an attempt to smuggle gold through their area of responsibility. The input said that smugglers disguised as farmers would move from Hakimpur market towards Swaroopdah.”
He said troops had set up additional checkpoints on dirt tracks running through paddy fields.
He said that around 11.24 am, a man dressed as a local farmer was seen moving from the paddy fields towards the main road on a bicycle, he was stopped and searched.
“The soldiers found a packet wrapped in brown paper in the knot of his lungi. On opening the packet, six gold biscuits were found. The man was apprehended and taken to Tarali-1 BOP,” he said.
During preliminary interrogation the smuggler confessed that the gold was brought across the border from Bangladesh.
The arrested person along with the seized gold has been handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal action.
The weight of the biscuit was 712 grams and its price was approximately Rs 88.34 lakh.
BSF has seized a large amount of gold near the India-Bangladesh border in the last several weeks.
The official said several smugglers and couriers have been arrested, and valuable information has been obtained about the networks involved in smuggling.
He said that this has been possible through intelligence gathering and better coordination between all departments.
