US media quoted Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron as saying the plane reported engine and power failures at around 7:40 pm (0140 GMT Tuesday).
The plane had been cleared for an emergency landing at Nashville’s John C. Thune Airport but crashed just a few kilometers from the airport.
He said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board would investigate the accident.
