The Subramaniam Swamy temple in Tiruchendur will host Yagasalai puja on October 22 to begin the six-day Skanda Shashthi festival. Surasamaharam, the primary festival, is considered one of the most important spiritual rituals in Tamil Nadu and is celebrated on 27 October.
Although Skanda Shashthi is celebrated on the sixth day of the lunar fortnight every month, the most significant is the celebration during the Tamil month of Aiyappaasi (mid-October to mid-November).
It honors the victory of Lord Murugan over the demon Surapadman.
The administration has declared a local holiday for government offices, schools, colleges and banks in the area on Monday, October 27.
The ‘Skanda Shashthi’ ritual is deeply ingrained in Tamil culture, especially in the southern districts. It attracts thousands of devotees to the area with its elaborate ceremonies, processions and temple activities. Thousands of devotees are expected to visit the holy Tiruchendur Murugan temple on the festival day.
Importance of Skanda Shashthi 2025
Known by many names including Kartikeya, Subramaniam and Murugan, Skanda is praised for his compassion, bravery and wisdom. The spiritual significance of Skanda Shashthi originates from the belief that Lord Murugan is a rescuer and protector who alleviates difficulties and restores harmony in the lives of his followers.
Skanda Shashthi Vrat is observed by devotees in the hope of receiving heavenly blessings for spiritual growth, achievement in their ventures and relief from hardship. Many devotees visit popular Murugan temples, such as the Palani Murugan Temple or the Sri Subramanya Swamy Devasthanams in Tiruchendur, to offer prayers and participate in the festive rituals.
