The Election Commission of India has launched the second phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 12 states and union territories, an important step towards ensuring cleaner and more accurate electoral rolls ahead of key elections next year.

The exercise, which began on Tuesday, November 4, involves about 51 crore voters, almost half of India’s registered voters.

What is SIR and what is its importance?

SIR is a comprehensive voter verification process that is carried out periodically to maintain the “purity” of the voter list by removing ineligible voters and adding genuine ones.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar also said that for the past few decades, “almost all political parties have consistently complained about the inaccuracy of the voter list.”

According to a report in The Indian Express, the EC had conducted about eight SIR exercises between 1951 and 2004, the last of which was conducted in 2002-04.

The current phase extends to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, where counting will continue till December 4.

Here’s how to check if your name is in the voter list

Citizens can verify their name in the electoral list through the ECI website or respective State Election Commission websites.

Basic steps to be followed to check name in voter list:

To check whether your name is registered in the voter list or not, follow the following basic steps:

3. Then click on ‘Search’ to view your voter details.

Alternatively, you can visit National Voters’ Service Portal (NVSP) nvsp.in

1. Select ‘Search Electoral Roll’ option from the NVSP portal.

2. Follow the steps in which you are asked to enter your EPIC number or your personal details.

3. Click on ‘Search’ and your details will appear on the portal.

What to do if your name is not in the list?

If your name or details are missing or incorrect, you can visit nvsp.in or use the Voter Helpline app or ECINET app to fill Form 6 (for new registration) or Form 8 (for correction).

You may need to keep some documents ready for the application.
