The exercise, which began on Tuesday, November 4, involves about 51 crore voters, almost half of India’s registered voters.
What is SIR and what is its importance?
SIR is a comprehensive voter verification process that is carried out periodically to maintain the “purity” of the voter list by removing ineligible voters and adding genuine ones.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar also said that for the past few decades, “almost all political parties have consistently complained about the inaccuracy of the voter list.”
According to a report in The Indian Express, the EC had conducted about eight SIR exercises between 1951 and 2004, the last of which was conducted in 2002-04.
The current phase extends to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, where counting will continue till December 4.
