Kolkata, Nov 16 (IANS) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has targeted to complete the digitization process of voters’ details mentioned in the enumeration forms in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal by the end of November.
Sources in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal said, “The process of digitization of enumeration forms collected by booth level officials has already started and digitization of about 50 lakh enumeration forms has already been completed. The pace of digitization work will increase from Sunday and is expected to be completed by the end of the month as directed by the Commission.”
On Saturday evening, West Bengal CEO Manoj Kumar Aggarwal attended an urgent meeting with the district magistrates, who are also the district returning officers, and their subordinate returning officers in the districts, during which the deadline was fixed.
Top ECI officials from New Delhi also participated virtually in the meeting.
Meanwhile, a four-member central ECI team will visit West Bengal to review the ongoing SIR, which started on November 4.
The four members of the team will include Deputy Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Bharti, two principal secretaries of the ECI, SB Joshi and Malay Mallik, and Deputy Secretary, Abhinav Agarwal.
He will reach Kolkata on November 18 and will stay in the state till November 21. During the visit, the team would like to review the SIR progress in Kolkata, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad and Malda.
The second visit of the central ECI team to West Bengal to review the vetting exercise indicated that the special focus of the election panel was on the progress of SIR in the state.
Earlier this month, a central ECI team led by Bharti had visited West Bengal after enumeration form distribution began on November 4.
During a three-day visit earlier this month, the central team reviewed SIR progress in four districts of North Bengal.
The first phase of the three-phase SIR in West Bengal began on November 4. The entire process is expected to be completed by March next year. The last time SIR was conducted in West Bengal was in 2002.
