Hip-hop artist Akon was arrested in the suburbs last week atlanta He did not appear in court to face a ticket for driving with a suspended license.
Police Records show Akon, whose legal name is Aliyoune Thiam, was arrested by police in Chamblee, northeast of Atlanta, on Friday. Akon was taken to the DeKalb County Jail, where he was handed over Roswell Police. They in turn put Thiam in another jail, after which he got bail and was released the same day.
Akon, who was born United States of America To Senegalese parents, rose to R&B fame after his 2004 debut album. The Grammy-nominated singer has performed on more than a dozen Top 10 hits, including “Smack That,” “I Wanna Love You” and “Locked Up.” He has also been active in philanthropic work AfricaLived in Senegal in my childhood.
Representatives for Akon did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Wednesday.
Roswell police reports show Akon, who lists an address in a gated community in neighboring Alpharetta, was found in a disabled Tesla Cybertruck on a busy road on September 10. The police officer called for a tow truck. While he waited, reports say the officer checked the license plate and discovered Akon had no valid auto insurance and that his driver’s license was suspended for failing to appear at a court hearing in January 2023.
The report said police seized the truck and cited Akon for driving without a valid license, took away the license he had, and released him. Police also found and confiscated an “illegal vape,” the report said.
Chamblee police told local news outlets that they responded to a business called Tint World on Friday when a traffic camera alerted them that the Cybertruck was present and connected to an outstanding warrant.
Akon is currently on India tour. On Sunday, two days after his arrest, he demonstrated in Delhi.
