The largest gold nugget ever found in the UK was unearthed by an experienced metal detector who arrived an hour late with defective equipment.
Richard Brock, 67, drove three and a half hours from Somerset Shropshire A group of people dig in the farmland on the mountain.
When he arrived, he discovered that his metal detection kit was not working and had to dismantle an old, faulty machine.
However, after 20 minutes of digging, Bullock did find gold when he unearthed a huge 64.8-gram nugget buried about 6 inches underground.
The metal, known as ‘Hiro’s Nugget’, is believed to be the largest of its kind found on British soil and is expected to fetch at least £30,000 at a limited-time auction until April 1.

Bullock, who has been working as a metal detector for 35 years, said he thought he “missed the operation.”
“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I was late, only arriving a few minutes, when the treasure hunt was supposed to last all day.”
The probe made the rare discovery near the village of Much Wenlock, which is believed to be an ancient railway line that may contain stones from Wales, a gold-rich region.
“It just goes to show that it doesn’t matter what device you use,” Bullock added.
“If you walk where you find it and be alert enough to what might be lurking beneath the soil, it can make a big difference.”
According to the detector, the largest one previously found in the UK weighed 54 grams. But he added that research showed larger nuggets were located in Wales and Scotland.
In 2016, a gold nugget weighing 97.12 grams was discovered in Ynys Mon, Wales. In 2019, a Reunion gold nugget weighing 121.3 grams was discovered in Scotland.
