Ship that hit U.S. bridge last year passed two inspections

Singapore:

A cargo ship that hit the Baltimore Bridge, causing it to collapse and clog one of the busiest commercial ports in the United States, has passed two overseas inspections in 2023, the Port Authority of Singapore said on Wednesday.

“The ship’s required classification society and statutory certificates covering the structural integrity of the ship and the functionality of the ship’s equipment were valid at the time of the incident,” the port authority said.

It added that the fault with the fuel pressure monitor was corrected in June.

Late Tuesday, the Port Authority said its investigators and personnel from the Transportation Safety Investigation Service were heading to Baltimore to provide assistance to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Singapore-flagged vessel “experienced a brief loss of propulsion” before hitting the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed and blocked the commercial port.

The Port of Baltimore is the ninth busiest major port in the United States in terms of foreign cargo volume and foreign cargo value, directly supports more than 15,000 jobs and supports nearly 140,000 people.

U.S. authorities on Tuesday suspended the search for six people missing after the incident, citing cold water temperatures and the passage of time.
