Sherbaz Sharif, Omar Ayub file nomination papers for Pakistan PM: Report

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) joint candidate Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Committee Ittehad Council nominee Omar Ayub Both men have submitted nomination papers for the country’s prime minister’s post, ARY News reported on Saturday.

The Secretary of the National Assembly received the nomination papers.

A candidate must receive 169 votes in the 336-member parliament to be elected prime minister.

The PML-N and its allies, including the Pakistan People’s Party, claimed to have the support of more than 200 parliamentarians, ARY News reported.

In the February 8 elections, independent candidates backed by Imran Khan’s PTI won the most parliamentary seats with 93 MPs.

Meanwhile, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz was elected as the 22nd Speaker of the National Assembly on Friday.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf presides over the National Assembly (NA) meeting to elect the new NA Speaker. The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) protested throughout the meeting, ARY News reported.

The election of the Speaker is by secret ballot. Members voted one by one.

PML-N candidate Ayaz Sadiq received 199 votes, while Amir Dogar from the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) received 91 votes. Sardare Ayaz Sadiq was sworn in as the next Speaker of Parliament after the formal announcement by Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.
