Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid heartfelt tribute to renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha on her first death anniversary.
In a post on his official
Sharda Sinha, considered one of the greatest folk voices of Bihar, passed away on November 5, 2024, after a prolonged illness.
Known for his contributions to Bhojpuri, Maithili, Angika, Bajika and other regional languages, he played an important role in taking the folk culture of Bihar to national and global audiences. He sang more than 1,500 songs in different languages.
His Chhath songs, in particular, became synonymous with the festival and brought unprecedented recognition to the cultural identity of Bihar.
Recognizing his immense contribution to folk music, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991, the Padma Bhushan in 2018 and in January 2025, he was posthumously awarded the country’s second highest civilian award – the Padma Vibhushan.
This recognition of Sharda Sinha’s legacy underlines her unique contribution to folk music and her important role in preserving and spreading India’s rich cultural heritage across the world.
Sharda Sinha’s journey in folk music is seen not only as a personal achievement but also as a cultural milestone that enhanced the artistic pride of Bihar.
His fans say that even though many singers have been inspired by him, no one can replace his distinctive voice and the stature he brought to traditional music.
His legacy continues to inspire millions – and his contribution to preserving India’s folk heritage is unparalleled.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar while paying tribute to him said that he has made a huge contribution in the world of music. In a post on XC, he wrote in Hindi (translated), “On the death anniversary of Smt. Sharda Sinha Ji, the Nightingale of Bihar, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee, we pay our humble tribute to her. The melodious songs sung by Smt. Sharda Sinha Ji in her melodious voice during Chhath Mahaparva even today resonate across Bihar and all parts of the country. Her memory will always remain in the land of Bihar, among the music world and music lovers.”
