New Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS) Sharjeel Imam — jailed in a “major conspiracy case” over the 2020 Delhi riots and booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) — will contest the Bihar Assembly elections from Bahadurganj constituency in Kishanganj district.
As an independent candidate, Sharjeel Imam has sought interim bail from October 15 to October 29. He filed an interim bail plea before Karkardooma Court Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Sameer Bajpai, who is hearing the Delhi riots conspiracy case.
The Supreme Court has already considered the bail pleas of Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid, Meeran Haider and Gulfisha Fatima and has sought response from Delhi Police.
The student activists have been in jail for the last five years.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court had refused to grant bail to many leaders in the case of the alleged big conspiracy behind the Delhi riots.
In its order passed on September 2, a bench of Justices Shalinder Kaur and Naveen Chawla noted the inflammatory speech during the state visit of then US President Donald Trump on February 24, 2020, which the prosecution alleged was deliberately timed to incite riots and attract international attention on February 23-24.
“The alleged inflammatory and provocative speeches made by the appellants, when considered in totality, prima facie indicate their role in the alleged conspiracy,” the Delhi High Court said.
ECI has announced that Bihar Assembly elections will be held in two phases on November 6 and 11, with the counting of votes taking place on November 14. Voting will be held in Bahadurganj on November 11.
