A local court on Sunday sent Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh’s brother Sheikh Alamgir and two others to central agency and police custody for five days for assaulting an Education Department official during a raid in Sandeshkhali on January 5. They said the Basirhat sub-divisional court sentenced Alamgir, Sirajul Molla and Mafijul Molla to five days of CBI custody.
India’s Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Alamgir and two others on Saturday after a marathon interrogation over the attack.
The agency suspected the men were involved in attacks on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and incited the crowd to target the team when they raided Sheikh’s residence.
Incidentally, sources said CBI officials on Sunday issued summons to seven others in Sandesh Khali for assaulting an Enforcement Directorate officer.
Sandeshkhali, a riverside island about 80 kilometers from Kolkata, has been in the news after local women accused Shajahan Sheikh and his men involved in fish farming and trading of land grabbing and sexual abuse. .
Sheikh was arrested on February 29 after 55 days on the run, accused of sexual atrocities and land grabbing during violent protests led by women. He disappeared on January 5 after a mob attacked an emergency room team that went to search his house during an alleged ration distribution scam.
The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation took over the investigation into the allegations against him. He was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation on an order of the Calcutta High Court.
On March 10, the court sent him to CBI custody for four days, which was later extended for eight days till March 22.
The CBI has taken over the investigation into three cases related to the January 5 incident when the ED team was attacked by a mob of around 1,000 people. A former state minister has been arrested in connection with the ration scam case.
