Sharjeer Imam
Jinan University student Sharjeel Imam has moved the Supreme Court seeking bail. He has submitted a bail application to the court, which will hear it on Tuesday, October 22. A bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma will hear Sharjeel’s bail application.
Sharjeel Imam was arrested in January 2020. He was accused of delivering inflammatory speeches at Jamia and Aligarh Muslim Universities in Delhi. Sharjeel is facing sedition and UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) cases. Earlier, the Delhi High Court had postponed the hearing on Sharjeel’s bail plea. The court is scheduled to hear the case on November 25.
Sharjeel was accused by Delhi police of delivering inflammatory speeches at Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia area. Following this, an FIR was registered against him and he was arrested in 2020 from Jehanabad, Bihar. Later, offenses under UAPA were added. Sharjeel was also accused of inciting riots in Delhi.
Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat cited various sections of the IPC against Sharjeel, including Sections 124A, 153A, 153B, 505 of UAPA and Section 13 of UAPA. Charges were filed against the Imam in a lower court in 2022 after he threatened to separate Assam and parts of the northeast from India. Apart from Sharjeel Imam, student leaders Safra Zagar, Chanda Yadav and many others were charged in the case.
The Delhi riots left 53 people dead and more than 700 injured. Violence broke out during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, known as CAA, and the National Register of Citizens, known as NRC, and much chaos ensued. There is a lot of politics surrounding this issue.
Sharjeel Imam was born in Kako village, Jehanabad, Bihar. He graduated in Computer Science from IIT Bombay and received his PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Sharjeer’s father, Akbar Imam, was related to politics and was the leader of JDU. In 2014, he passed away due to illness.
