Basilhat:
A court in West Bengal’s Basirhat on Sunday extended the custody of Shahjahan Sheikh for four more days on the prayers of the central agency. Shahjahan Shaikh was the main accused in the Sandeshkhali mob attack on education ministry officials.
The CBI detained Sheikh on March 6 and handed him over for investigation on an order of the Calcutta High Court.
Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials were attacked during a raid at the Sandeshkhali residence of the now-suspended Trinamool Congress leader.
On the central agency’s request, the judge of Basirhat court in North 24 Parganas district agreed to extend Sheikh’s custody by four days.
The court directed that Sheikh be produced before the court again on March 14.
Sheikh was brought to Basirhat court, about 70 km from Kolkata, where he was detained by the CBI and kept under tight security.
On January 5, education ministry officials were attacked by a mob of around 1,000 when they raided Sheikh’s residence in Sandeshkhali as the agency was probing an alleged ration distribution scam in which a former state minister had been arrested .
Sheikh was arrested by the state police on February 29, a day after the High Court ordered that the CBI, ED or West Bengal police could arrest him.
