The 48-year-old Chernus is known for playing adam scott‘s goofy on-screen brother-in-law Emmy-winning sci-fi dramaleads Peacockupcoming crime drama of Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy.
Premiering on Thursday, the new scripted drama series — based on the streamer’s 2021 documentary of the same name — will tell the story of Gacy, who was convicted of brutally murdering at least 33 people in the 1970s.

“To be honest, when I first got the call that I was interested in playing John Wayne Gacy I was hesitant, because it sounds really complicated and complicated,” Chernus said.

Most of his victims were men whom he lured from a Greyhound bus stop or picked up off the street. He usually offered them money for drinks, food, or sex to bring them back to his farm located in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.

Meanwhile, publicly, Gacy was a frequent fundraiser and participated in several charitable organizations. He eventually joined a group of people who performed as clowns, and developed his own characters of “Pogo” and “Patches”, both clowns. Gacy often performed at children’s parties wearing his clown costume.
After luring his victims back to his home, Gacy would offer to teach them magic tricks, sometimes dressed as his clown characters. After demonstrating a trick involving handcuffs, he would offer to teach illusions to his victims before securing them in handcuffs to rape and torture them.
Ultimately, he would kill his victims by strangulating them with a rope or by stuffing a cloth around their necks. As a result of his manner and manner of committing murders, he earned the nickname “Killer Clown”.
Gacy, convicted of his crimes in 1980, was imprisoned for more than 15 years, ultimately executed by hanging in 1994 at the age of 52.

In addition to Chernus, the series also stars Gabriel Luna, James Badge Dale, Michael Angarano, Chris Sullivan, and Marin Ireland.
Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy Will be available to stream on Peacock on Thursday.
