Seven ways to edit photos of the late Queen

A second photo of the royal family has come under scrutiny after a major photo agency added a note saying it had been “digitally enhanced”.

image of late queen Kensington Palace shared the news on April 21 last year, which would have been the Queen’s 97th birthday.

Just a week later, Getty Images changed its annotation on the photo, taken by the Princess of Wales at Balmoral Castle in the summer of 2022. Photo agencies pull photos of Kate and her three children Worry about it being “rigged” at the source.

Sky News spoke to a photo forensics expert who identified seven ways in which photos of the late Queen could have been edited:

Handout photo of The Princess of Wales/Kensington Palace, where photo experts have confirmed edited areas were highlighted by Sky News

1) To the left of the couch button, there appears to be a vertical edit line running along the image – causing the fold line from the button to the left to be non-straight.

2) This editing line extends along the entire image to the edge of the queen’s blanket. You can see that the cross stitch is unbalanced from right to left.

3) Just below Prince Louis’ ears, there appears to be what could be his hair, but where his cheeks are more rounded, it looks like an uneven cut.

4) A small flaw is visible near the arm of Savannah Phillips, the Queen’s great-granddaughter, possibly added accidentally during the editing process.

5) There is also an obvious vertical line on the edge of the sofa, turned 90 degrees to the left, with a blue blemish that is not part of the sofa.

6) Under the armrests of the chairs, some unusual black and white zigzags can be seen. It looks like someone is trying to make it fade out.

7) Mia Tindall’s hair is replicated and has a clear editorial vertical line that breaks up the indentations and shadows of the sofa buttons.

“Getty Images can confirm that, in accordance with its editorial policy, it has added an editorial note to the distributed image stating that it has been digitally enhanced at the source,” Getty Images said in a statement.

Agencies that distribute news photos prohibit the publication of excessively edited images.
