Father of Abraham Quintanilla Jr. tejano pop icon selenaIs dead. He was 86 years old.
Quintanilla was best known for managing Selena, dubbed the “Queen of Tejano Music”, and her band, Selena y Los Dinos.
His death was announced in a Instagram Posted today, December 13, by his son, Abraham “AB” Quintanilla III, who wrote: “It is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that my dad passed away today…”
Abraham Isaac Quintanilla Jr. was born on February 22, 1939 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
At the age of 14, Quintanilla formed his first musical group, the Gumdrops. He pursued a career in music with another group, the Dinos.
He was serving in the army in the early 1960s when he met Marcela Samora. The couple married in June 1963 while living in Washington state.
Marcela gave birth to Selena Quintanilla in April 1971. His father recognized his singing ability from an early age, when he began playing guitar with his brother AB. Selena’s sister Suzette was also recruited to play drums.
AB told in 2020 People: “There are a lot of families who think, ‘My kids are talented, they sing, they’re amazing,’ but as a musician my father saw something we didn’t see.”
After returning to Corpus Christi, Abraham formed a family band, Selena y Los Dinos. She signed a record deal in 1984, and within a few years Selena had established herself as a leading voice in Tejano music, the fusion genre popular in Mexico.
selena’s 1993 album Selena Live! won a Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album, while his 1994 follow-up Forbidden love At the time it was the best-selling Latin album of all time.
In 1995, at the age of 23, Selena was murdered by Yolanda Saldivar, the former president of the Selena fan club. Saldivar, who is still serving a life sentence for murder in Texas, was denied parole in March

After their daughter’s death, Abraham and Marcella took care to preserve her legacy and starred in the 1997 biopic Selena Which starred Jennifer Lopez.
The family also told their story Recent Netflix Documentaries Selena and Los Dinos: A Family Legacy.
The film’s director, Isabel Castro, said Selena “became representative of something important to me, like, what it means to be a Latina in this country.” “Watching the home video reminded me that she was a young girl who died at the age of 23.”
Abraham Quintanilla Jr. is survived by his wife Marcela and their children Abraham “Abby” and Suzette.
