A second man has been charged with murder in connection with a shooting that left two people dead and 12 others wounded in the bustling nightlife district of Alabama’s capital city in early October, police said.
Montgomery police announced Tuesday that 19-year-old Dentavius McGhee was arrested a day earlier and charged with one count of capital murder, nine counts of assault in the first degree and three counts of assault in the second degree.
McGhee is the second suspect charged for his alleged role in the Oct. 4 shooting, which happened just before midnight in a crowded part of the city filled with bars, hotels and restaurants. The police also arrested an unidentified teenager on the same charge on Friday. The teen’s name was not immediately released.
It was not immediately known if McGhee had an attorney who could comment for him.
Police said a 43-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy died. At the time, five of the injured had life-threatening injuries and seven had non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators have not said what sparked the shooting, but they believe the initial gunfire targeted one of the 14 victims, causing several people to draw their weapons and return fire. Seven 14 of the victims were under the age of 20, and the youngest was 16 years old. At least two of the victims were armed.
Police said several weapons and shells were recovered from the scene and more arrests were expected.
