The PA news agency believes the 54-year-old is the preferred candidate to take over the post at the City Ground after Ange Postecoglou was sacked on Saturday.
Dyche, who lives in Nottingham and was an apprentice at the club, is in advanced discussions to become Forest’s third manager of the season and barring any delays, an announcement could come within the next 24 hours.
He has been out of work since leaving Everton at the beginning of the year.

The Australian was in position for just 39 days, but impatient boss Evangelos Marinakis pulled the trigger after no wins in his opening eight matches.
Postecoglou, who had already received a flat in the city before his dismissal, was appointed following the exit of Nuno Espirito Santo.
Nuno was fired in the September international break after a breakdown in relations with Marinakis and global football chief Edu Gaspar.
The Portuguese had signed a new contract at the City Ground just three months earlier, bringing European football to Forest for the first time in 20 years.
But Forest’s season has been thrown into disarray following a boardroom dispute, and the decision to bring Postecoglou to the club has backfired.
If a deal is completed, Dyche’s first game in charge could be a Europa League clash with Porto at the City Ground on Thursday.
Forest remain in the Premier League relegation zone with just five points after eight matches, but Dyche will inherit a squad that will have an investment of more than £100million in the summer.
