Scotland will get New Bank Holidays 2026 Remembering the Men’s National Team Participate in the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

First Minister John Swinney proposed Monday 15 June declared bank holiday Let the Scots celebrate the comeback.
“Scotland’s qualification for the Men’s World Cup is a fantastic achievement and a landmark moment and the reaction to the dramatic victory over Denmark reminded us all of what football means to this country,” Mr Swinney said.
“This year we want to make the most of this huge opportunity for Scotland and ensure as many people as possible have the opportunity to celebrate the team’s success.

“Not only is this a historic sporting event, it is an opportunity for Scotland to be on the world stage, attract business development, create tourism interest domestically and build cultural and sporting links.
“That’s why I’m taking steps to ensure that the Monday after our first game should be a national bank holiday so that – regardless of the outcome – we can all come together and share this moment.”
Bank holidays are established under the Banking and Financial Transactions Act 1971. Relevant powers were devolved by the Scotland Act 1998.
Scotland can set bank holidays differently from the rest of the UK, with powers devolved under the Scotland Act 1998.
Scotland can declare a day as a bank holiday under the Royal Proclamation, which means the First Minister advises the Privy Council on proclamations in Scotland and the King then designates them by Royal Proclamation.
However, employers are not legally obliged to observe bank holidays if declared.
