Chennai and Tiruvallur district administrations have declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Thursday (December 4) as the remnants of Cyclone Ditvaah continue to lash the region with heavy rains. Educational institutions remain closed due to heavy rains and floods reported in both the districts in the last few days.

Low-lying areas of south Chennai remain particularly vulnerable, with water-logging in many areas. Municipal corporation teams are working in the affected areas, deploying pumps to clear accumulated water and keeping major roads accessible.

IMD has predicted more heavy rains

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted very heavy rain in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram districts till Thursday afternoon. The system – after weakening from a depression to a well-marked low pressure area over the south-western Bay of Bengal – is bringing persistent rain to the coastal and interior areas.

Interior districts like Villupuram, Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai also reported repeated heavy rains.

Madras University postponed examinations

Madras University has postponed all UG, PG and professional degree theory examinations scheduled for Wednesday due to rain. Registrar Prof. Rita John said that the revised dates will be announced soon. No update has been issued yet regarding Thursday’s examinations.

Transport, livelihood disrupted

Incessant rains have led to waterlogging on main roads, slowing down traffic and hampering daily commute. Small traders and daily wage laborers have been particularly hard hit, with many unable to work due to flooding and reduced footfall. Authorities have urged residents to avoid waterlogged roads and follow safety advisories.
