Schoolchildren taught how to treat stab wounds after Bristol attack

Students are learning how to treat serious knife wounds after a wave of knife attacks in their city.

Their schools have been given bleeding kits containing pads, bandages and tourniquets so students can stop catastrophic blood loss before paramedics arrive.

It comes after two teenage boys were stabbed to death and other knife attacks took place. Bristol.

The kits were on display at the last minute of a school forum, with campaigner Leanne Reynolds showing children how to use pads, bandages and tourniquets.

She has been promoting the kits since 2021, when 18-year-old Dontae Davis was stabbed to death in a series of attacks between rival gangs on the city’s east side.

She said: “There has been a spike in serious violence. I’m a parent and I’m scared so I’m trying to get these kits out to schools and other organizations in Bristol and the South West.

“They have the potential to save life or limb before an ambulance arrives to take over.”

School friends Lila and Genevieve, both 15, watched the demonstration and then practiced applying bandages to each other.

Lila said: “It’s really scary (what’s happening), especially at such a young age. Issues like this happen all the time, but lately it’s been really bad.

“It’s crazy that we have to think about these things when we start learning how to treat stab wounds at 15 years old.”

Genevieve said she was concerned that extra security measures in schools were not always enough to deter knife use.

She said: “Something can happen in schools. There is a lack of security. They trust us to tell them things but a lot of times it doesn’t happen and people don’t notice until the worst inevitably happens. .

“There’s no real escaping it because almost every field is affected by it in some way. It’s our age group so you can’t ignore it.

“I kept thinking about where not to go to reduce the risk of getting stabbed.”
