The stars of the teenage world will descend on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile on Saturday, with the Dewhurst Stakes taking centre-stage. Horse racing correspondent Jonathan Doidge has a selection to follow at Dewhurst as part of Saturday’s racing tips, focusing on Newmarket and York.
Darley Dewhurst Stakes Tips (Newmarket, 15.00)
This has the potential to be a very good renewal and given their respective records in the race, anything trained by Aidan O’Brien (five of the last ten winners) and Charlie Appleby (three of the last six winners) should be given fair consideration.
Market leaders also have a good record, with seven of them being absolute favorites over the past decade betting sites Obliging, as well as a joint favourite.
Those stats alone mark both this year’s ‘jolly’ Distant Storm (Appleby) and second favorite Gstaad (O’Brien) as serious contenders. There is no doubt that they are. Gstaad was impressive when contesting the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and has since finished second in two Group 1 events.
Distant Storm made an impressive debut on the July Course (7F, good to firm). He then snatched his chance when he was too keen to again oppose Geven in the Group 3 Acomb at York. His most recent effort was on this C&D, when he dealt much better with a hold-up strategy and ran an impressive winner.
He fits the ‘anything goes’ tag at the moment and is arguably a worthy favorite horse racing betting sitesHowever, the prices should definitely be worth ZAVATERI.
Eve Johnson Houghton may not have trained a winner of this race before, but she is proud of the fact that her late father Fulke, who died in February, trained the 2002 winner Tout Seul. If she can do so it will be an emotional triumph and Zavetari looks perfectly equipped to do so.
Undefeated in four starts, the son of Without Parole did not see a racecourse until June, but by the end of July, he had won back-to-back Group 2 races, the Bahrain Stakes on Newmarket’s July Course and the Glorious Vintage Stakes at Goodwood. Proving that there were no mistakes he came from behind to get the better of a long battle with Gstaad to win the Group 1 National Stakes.
Having proven at this level and without any apparent reason that form will be overturned, he is the one for me.
Saturday Racing Tip 1: Zavateri (Newmarket, 15.00) – first win at 10/3 (William Hill,
Night of Thunder Zetland Stakes (Newmarket, 13.50)
Earlier on the card, the Group 3 Zetland Stakes pitted the gelded Look To The Stars against Ballydoyle representatives Endorsement and Pierre Bonnard.
Look To The Stars took a few starts to get the hang of things and has since performed well with wins at Kempton (7f, AW) and Newbury (1m, good to soft). He has scope for further improvement to 1m1f at this stage.
The same can be said about some of these, not least Select Support, which is getting the beat on both debuts. He first showed potential when finishing runner-up at Killarney (1m, good for soft) and improved on that when scoring at Tipperary (1m 1f, good for yield) in August.
I like the fact that they’re given a little bit of time before they come here and move up in grade. He had a long way to go in that win over Tipperary and in the end he was doing his best work and winning. To me, he looks like more of a prospect than a favorite betting apps, And I’m happy to support him.
Saturday Racing Tip 2: Support (Newmarket, 13.50) – Win by 1 point @ 3/1 (Unibet,
Club Godolphin Cesarevich Handicap (Newmarket, 15.40)
Ireland have cultivated the second half of the traditional ‘Autumn Double’ in recent seasons, winning six of the last seven renewals and the Emerald Isle is again in the crowd.
Last year’s winner Alphonse Le Grande is back for more and remains top of the market, although he will have to carry 6 pounds more weight than last season. At the time of writing, four of the first five in the betting carry the Irish hopes but I’m going to favor one of their other representatives.
Dawn Rising has the green and gold hoops of JP McManus and is very well behaved at his best. As a Queen Alexandra Stakes winner, he will get every yard of this 2m2f, he works on a good surface and with Oisin Murphy booked for the ride, he looks worth supporting us all the way (in as many places as your bookmaker will allow) to get a return.
Recent form hasn’t been much to write home about, but that’s in his price and he did well this time last year.
Saturday Racing Tip 3: Dawn Rising (Newmarket, 15.40) – 0.5 points each way @ 14/1 (bet365,
Coral Sprint Trophy Handicap (York, 15.15)
There might not just be a hint of madness in taking on this 22-runner sprint hurdle on the final day of York’s 2025 season, but in the words of ‘Del Boy’, “He who dares wins!”
In our case, the profit that Courage returns will be enough and in that regard, we will cut to the chase here and suggest Corker.
Yes, yes, I know he hasn’t won for two years but he still has a few things in his favor. At first, he performed well at this venue, where he rarely ran a bad race, finishing in the first four in 11 of his 15 races at Nevesmire.
He still has plenty of speed and can work in any conditions, so no matter what the weather, he’ll have no objections, while he’s also got a very easy low draw (all but one of the last ten winners of this race have been drawn in single digits).
With 5lb claimed by Jack Nicholls, he effectively takes the lowest points haul since winning on his handicap debut in 2021. Yes, you can certainly question the fact that all of his wins have been under 6f, but he is ranked above C&D so he just sees it and the forecast of good ground will help on that score. I think, at 28/1 at the time of writing, he’ll be right there and could be backed every way.
Saturday Racing Tip 4: Corker (York, 15.15) – 0.5 points each way @ 28/1 (Ladbrokes,
