On the second day of the fourth Test against England in Ranchi, Indian batsmen faced a lot of difficulties in facing the spin bowling of Shoaib Bashir. After the Ben Stokes-led England team posted a challenging score of 353 runs, the Indian batsmen seemed unable to deny the challenge. Apart from Yashasvi Jaiswal, none of the top order batsmen could score big. After the first four wickets fell, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan made a strong partnership.

Sarfaraz Khan made a good start in the third test and scored half-centuries in both the innings. Batting on 62 runs in the debut innings, he was run out after a mistake with Ravindra Jadeja. Even on Saturday, Sarfaraz Khan was afraid of run out. Sarfaraz Khan got into a tussle with Yashasvi Jaiswal during one of Shoaib Bashir’s overs. He dived forward and narrowly escaped.

Earlier, young Yashasvi Jaiswal batted with full confidence and scored another half-century, but a triple strike by England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir took India’s score to 131 for four at tea on the second day of the fourth Test. Jaiswal hit five fours and a six in his unbeaten inning of 54 off 96 balls, his fourth fifty-plus score in seven innings of this series, which includes two double centuries.

While Jaiswal stood firm, India kept losing the wickets of Shoaib Bashir (3/32) at the other end and Shubman Gill (38), Rajat Patidar (17) and Ravindra Jadeja (12) for just 44 runs.

England were all out for 353 in the opening session, with Joe Root making an unbeaten 122 as the visitors made a stunning recovery after being reduced to 112/5 on the opening day.

In reply, India lost captain Rohit Sharma (2) cheaply inside the third over when old warrior James Anderson bowled a brilliant delivery which went slightly off the surface after being pitched on the right length.

After a cautious start, Gill picked up the pace in the post-lunch session and hit two brilliant fours off Anderson – one hitting the pads and a punch straight down the ground.

But young off-spinner Bashir, who came in place of Rehan Ahmed, gave success to England by breaking the good 82-run partnership between Gill and Jaiswal.

He bowled a ball that passed the crack just outside the off stump, trapping Gill on the pads as the Indians failed to review.

Jaiswal also survived a scare on 40 when he edged the ball to Ben Foakes, who took a forward diving catch, but replays confirmed that the ball had bounced on the ground before reaching his gloves.

Jaiswal then used his legs in front of Robinson and even danced down the track to send Bashir over long-on for a maximum score.

Patidar played a nervous innings before being out for 17, while Jadeja, again batting at No. 5, was out for 12 at tea.
